Remember a few weeks ago when we told you all about Paddleboard Orlando and their Friendly First Timer tours? Well… did you know that they also have a storefront on Lake Killarney? Uncle Ned, the owner of Paddleboard Orlando, calls it their SUP Shack. And it is the best kept secret in Winter Park.
The store is located in the Trader Joe’s plaza and is right next door to Orange Theory Fitness. There’s usually a pickup truck stacked with paddle boards parked out front, you can’t miss it. Once you walk through the doors, you immediately feel as though you’re on vacation. Out the back door, there is a large patio and lawn area – perfect for a picnic before or after your paddle. And just beyond that, is a dock leading to the lake. From the store you can rent paddle boards and kayaks – $25 for an hour or $35 for two hours. The rental fee includes: the board or kayak, a life vest and a lesson on land from one of their experienced instructors. The lesson is only necessary if you’ve never paddled before.
Lake Killarney is absolutely beautiful. This 239 acre lake is spring fed and gator-free, and private. The perimeter of the lake surrounded by residential homes. The only public access is the SUP Shack. This ensures that there isn’t a ridiculous amount of boats out on the water at a given time- this helps keep your time on the water peaceful and safe.
Once you’re hooked on the sport (‘cause it’s gonna happen), you can check out the selection of paddle boards they have for sale. They have boards of all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles lining the entire length of the store. More than that, they have their own line of paddle boards – Palm Paddle Co. Palm boards are colorful, unique, safe, and comfortable to paddle on. The SUP Shack even have used boards for sale. If you have any questions on which board is right for you, just ask that same instructor that gave you your lesson, and they’ll answer any and all questions you have about which board is right for you.
The store is open 7 days a week for all your paddleboard needs.
Uncle Ned originally opened the SUP Shack with his nephew, BooBoo – whose name is really David. (If you couldn’t tell – they really like nicknames over at PBO. If you hang around long enough, you’ll end up with your own nickname.) Both Florida natives, they had many years of experience on the water, whether it be wake boarding, boating, canoeing, kayaking or paddleboarding. They have a passion for making people happy and sharing their love for all things water. When speaking to Uncle Ned, he told me that their dream was to make the SUP Shack a “beach within reach.” Well, it’s safe to say they certainly have made that dream a reality.
